Introducing marginalpublishing.co.uk: The new online platform elevating young marginalised voices as the UK’s first youth-led publishing house

Groundbreaking UK publishing house Marginal is proud to launch a new website with which to platform and celebrate the young artists and writers who are part of its innovative publishing programme.

Launched by Liverpool based youth organisation Comics Youth CIC in 2019, the Marginal Leadership Programme is a project designed by, and for, marginalised youth to expand underrepresented narratives in print media. The initiative provides an opportunity for young people aged 8 – 25 to develop and publish their own narratives.

All participants of the programme receive 1-2-1 coaching, training, mentoring, and guidance in illustration, character design, writing, business development, and editorial management with the aim of opening up a career pathway within the publishing industry for all involved.

This is a critical step in creating some much needed change within an industry that often misrepresents, or ignores completely, the stories and experiences of young and marginalised people. Marginal aims to be a platform from which young people from diverse backgrounds can see themselves as characters in, and potential authors of, the books and comics they read.

With the newly launched website, Marginal is striding proudly out of the corners and into the spotlight to showcase the variety of talent and hard work of each and every young participant who is part of the publishing house.

The website will feature profiles of and interviews with the young artists and writers at the forefront of Marginal alongside samples of their artwork and writing. Crucially, it will also feature a webstore from which readers can pre-order and buy the various publications Marginal will be publishing over the coming year.

For those interested in supporting the initiative further, the website also features a link to a newly launched Patreon page set up by sibling organisation Comics Youth, as well as information about why and how Marginal aims to pay commission to every young person who develops work with the publishing house.

About Marginal

The Marginal Leadership Programme was founded in 2019 as an initiative to mentor and nurture disadvantaged, talented young artists as part of the first youth-led publisher in the UK. The goal is to change the publishing industry from the inside: Elevating underrepresented voices, providing career pathways, and expanding the overall narratives of society.

About Comics Youth

Comics Youth was founded in 2015 and is a creative community organisation led by young people, for young people. Our aim is to empower youth across the Liverpool City Region to flourish from the margins of society: Harnessing their own narratives, finding confidence within an inclusive community, and developing the resilience to succeed on their own path.
